42 bartenders took part to the competition and created drinks under the POP ART theme. The competition was divided into two parts:

  • 1st round: all contestants created on stage their cocktail and were noted by a technical and a sensory jury who selected 6 finalists.
  • 2nd round - The “pop box” challenge: the 6 contestants selected along with 3 finalists from the Asian MONIN Cup had to create a drink which respect a common theme and use products selected by the MONIN Team.

Kenshiro Shimizu, winner of the 2016 MONIN Cup Final

Kenshiro Shimizu, the Japanese contestant won the first prize ! What a lovely present for this young bartender who celebrated his 26 years old one day before. His sophistication on stage, his gesture and balance of his cocktail seduced the jury. Kuo Yung-Yi from Taïwan followed in second place and Eugenia Plesca from Moldova on the third one.

Kenshiro is a shy person in life but confident on stage ! He works today at Bar Noble in Yokohama. To be more innovative, he’s always searching and discovering new flavours. MONIN helps him to create new drinks thanks to a wide range of flavours.

What’s the recipe to win the MONIN Cup ?

  1. Be creative: Kenshiro was inspired by Motion Pictures and more specifically by the Palme d’Or, awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, which is a French emblem abroad.
  2. Use a great balance of flavours. Kenshiro's winning cocktail is made of acidulated flavours such as Yuzu and Grapefruit combined with the round taste of Vanilla.

Here is the recipe:

Palme d'or :
1,5 cl Le Fruit de MONIN Yuzu
1 cl MONIN Vanilla syrup
4,5 cl of gin
3 cl of grapefruit juice

Combine all ingredients in a shaker. Shake vigorously. Pour into a tumbler glass. Top with ginger ale. Garnish with basil leaves.

Kenshiro won a 2 000€  worth trip to discover one of the 4 MONIN Factories in the world. He also received a prestigious shaker made by Artist Vincenzo Laninno for the MONIN Cup winner (cf. picture above).
